Holiday fun at Mount Rainier: skiing, snowshoeing, but too soon for sliding hill

Here’s a winter-recreation update issued by Mount Rainier National Park on Dec. 17:

Recent storms have set the stage for winter fun at Mount Rainier for the upcoming holidays, with enough snow at Paradise for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarding.  As of Friday morning, 83 inches of snow was on the ground at Paradise. Last year on the same date, Paradise had only 30 inches of snow on the ground.

For visitors without equipment, the National Park Inn and General Store at Longmire offers full-day rentals of cross-country skis and snowshoes, in addition to lodging and dining.

Snow play: With snow levels varying, with some areas with as little as 36 inches, and ground and trees still protruding, the snow-play area at Paradise – the only park location authorized and designated for sliding – doesn’t yet have enough snow depth to open. A uniform minimum of 60 inches of snow is needed throughout the area to cover vegetation and rocks and provide enough snow to create containment berms. Last winter, with insufficient snow, the area never opened.

Hillary Clinton: ‘I Want to Be as Good a President as Beyoncé Is a Performer’

The candidate was asked if she'd rather be president or Beyoncé

At a town hall in Iowa on Wednesday afternoon, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton fielded a question that had nothing to do with the usual issues like healthcare or immigration or taxes or terrorism. Instead, the question was about music.

“If you could choose, would you rather be the president or Beyoncé?” the voter asked earnestly.

“I’d rather be president because I can’t sing,” Clinton replied. “Nobody would pay to see me sing or dance. Even when I was a way lot younger, that just wasn’t in the cards for me.”

'RHONJ' star Teresa Giudice's release from prison: What she can expect

"Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice is on schedule to be released from the Federal Correctional Institute in Danbury, Conn., next week — and, according to Usmagazine.com, just in time for Christmas dinner at sister-in-law Melissa Gorga's house. (Is the table bolted down?)

Giudice's formal release date from federal custody is Feb. 5, but the reality TV superstar, who pleaded guilty last year to bankruptcy fraud and conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, is expected to be released the morning of Dec. 23, two months before the end of her 15-month sentence, because of federal "good time" allowances.

What can she expect when she is released? Virtually all inmates check into a halfway house, called a residential reentry center, where their stay can last  months or less than a day, depending on the amount of time they've already served and how much adjustment they need — if they require help in finding work or looking for a place to live, for example.

But a U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokesperson has previously told NJ Advance Media that based on a 15-month sentence, Giudice "would not need a lot of adjustment time."

Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange Style Hair

Benedict Cumberbatch's

The move was meant to give creators like Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams a free hand in telling stories for a new era of Star Wars.

Australian audiences are counting down until the midnight screening after a star-studded red carpet premiere in Sydney tonight. A segment of Star Wars Expanded Universe fans had threatened to stage a "spoiler jihadi" on The Force Awakens if Disney doesn't create films based on events that take place in that previously established timeline.

Davis then took a selfie (using a selfie stick) with BB-8, as fans looked on and cheered.

That is to say, "The Empire Strikes Back" (the second film in the series, or episode V, if you prefer) was my first movie experience. No Star Wars movie since has been nominated for best picture because they were all more of the same (or, in the case of the prequels, just not very good).

The Force Awakens leans heavily into shades of Star Wars past and isn't shy about that in the least. The Force is strong with this one.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" premiered on Monday night and will be shown on different cinemas in the next couple of days.

Abrams directed, wrote and co-produced the film and praised newcomers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, saying: "These are two incredible actors, watching them together is awesome". And be sure to check out the new Star Wars film, in theaters on Friday!

'Longmire' season 5 updates: Netflix to end series after 5th season?

After Netflix made "Longmire" fans happy by extending the life of the show for season 5, the streaming service provider reportedly decided to wrap up the series at the end of the upcoming season.
Venture Capital Post reported that Netflix made the announcement that the crime drama series based on the "Walt Longmire Mysteries" book series written by Craig Johnson will end after the fifth season finale.
"Longmire" was first cancelled by A&E Network in 2014 despite the outstanding viewership ratings because the show does not fit the network's demographics. This prompted the fans of the series to begin a campaign to encourage other networks to pick up the show's fourth season. Three months later, Netflix heeded to the call and announced that it would bring back the show.
